Question of the day

Which amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech?

The First Amendment is the correct answer because it explicitly states that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech." The Second, Fourth, and Eighth Amendments do not mention or pertain to freedom of speech. Option B, the Second Amendment, guarantees the right to bear arms. Option C, the Fourth Amendment, protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. Option D, the Eighth Amendment, protects against cruel and unusual punishment. Therefore, none of these options guarantee the right to freedom of speech.

One content area covers roughly a third of the CLEP American Government exam by itself: Institutions and Policy Processes, the presidency, bureaucracy, and Congress, at 30-35% of your 100 questions. Everything else splits the remaining two-thirds across four narrower areas.

The full breakdown, straight from College Board's exam specifications:

Content Area Weight
Institutions and Policy Processes (Presidency, Bureaucracy, Congress) 30-35%
Federal Courts, Civil Liberties, and Civil Rights 15-20%
Political Parties and Interest Groups 15-20%
Constitutional Underpinnings of American Democracy 15-20%
Political Beliefs and Behavior 10-15%

100 questions, 90 minutes, some unscored pretest items mixed in without being flagged.

College Board also breaks down the type of thinking each question demands, separate from content area: about 55-60% is straightforward knowledge of American government and politics, 30-35% is understanding political processes, behavior, and governmental structures, and 10-15% requires analyzing and interpreting data. That last category catches people off guard if they've only memorized facts, reading and interpreting simple data tables is a real, tested skill here.

Constitutional Underpinnings covers federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, majority rule versus minority rights, and the historical reasoning behind the Constitution's adoption, foundational material, but only 15-20% of your score. Institutions and Policy Processes, by contrast, covers the structure, powers, and relationships between the presidency, bureaucracy, and Congress, and their connections to parties, interest groups, media, and public opinion, nearly double the weight of Constitutional Underpinnings on its own.

Given that one area is worth close to a third of your score, and the exam separately tests data interpretation as its own skill, an even split across five topics that treats data-table questions as an afterthought leaves real points on the table. Institutions and Policy Processes deserves the largest share of your review time, and practicing with actual data interpretation questions, not just fact review, closes a gap a lot of candidates don't realize exists until test day.

Our practice questions are weighted toward Institutions and Policy Processes to match the real exam, and include data interpretation questions alongside content review, with explanations for every answer.
